Privacy Policy – MADiFold Centaur App Android version
Effective date: 24 September 2026
This privacy policy explains how the Android apps published by MADiFold Studio ("MADiFold", "we", "us") handle your information. The first part applies to all MADiFold apps. The second part describes each app in detail, starting with Centaur. For the Desktop version of Centaur, see the Centaur for Desktop privacy policy.
This policy is separate from the privacy policy of our website (madifold.com/privacy-policy), which only covers visits to the website.
1. Who we are and how to contact us
MADiFold Studio is an independent app developer based in the Netherlands. For anything related to privacy, including questions or requests about your data, contact us at:
Email: madifold.studio+privacy@gmail.com
We aim to reply within 30 days.
2. Our general approach
- Your work stays yours. Our apps are designed to store your content on your own device. We do not run servers that receive, store or analyse your content.
- No accounts. Our apps do not require you to create an account or sign in.
- No advertising, analytics or tracking. Our apps contain no advertising, no analytics or crash-reporting services, and no tracking of any kind. We do not sell or share your data.
- Permissions only when needed. An app asks only for the permissions it needs for a feature you choose to use, and only when you use that feature.
3. Centaur
Centaur is a focused writing app for manuscripts. The following describes exactly what Centaur accesses and where that information goes.
3.1 Your manuscripts and project data
Your manuscripts and everything that belongs to them (parts, chapters, scenes, version checkpoints, notes, and the entity registry of characters, locations and other items) are stored in a database in Centaur's private storage on your device. Other apps cannot read this storage. Your app settings (such as theme, font and editor preferences) are also stored only on your device.
MADiFold never receives this data. Centaur has no online service or account to send it to.
3.2 Linking a project to a folder (optional)
You can choose to link a project to a folder, for example a folder synced by Nextcloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or Proton Drive. Centaur uses Android's system folder picker for this. Centaur can only access the folder you pick, and it keeps a copy of that project's database file in that folder so you can open the same project on other devices, for example in Centaur for desktop.
If the folder is synced by a cloud storage service, that service will upload and store the file under its own privacy policy and your agreement with that provider. Centaur does not communicate with those services directly. You can unlink a project at any time in the app, which removes Centaur's access to that folder.
3.3 Exporting (optional)
When you export a manuscript (ODT, RTF, Markdown or plain text), Centaur creates the file on your device and opens Android's share menu. You decide where the file goes (for example a file manager, an email app or a cloud storage app). What happens after that is handled by the app you choose.
3.4 Voice dictation and the microphone (optional)
Centaur has an optional dictation feature that turns your speech into text. For this it asks for the microphone permission (RECORD_AUDIO). The microphone is used only while you have actively started dictation, and never in the background.
Speech recognition is performed by the speech recognition service built into your Android device (on most devices this is provided by Google). Centaur hands the audio to that system service and receives only the recognised text back. Depending on your device and whether an offline language pack is installed for the chosen language (English or Dutch), the speech service may process the audio on your device or send it to its provider's servers. That processing is covered by the privacy policy of the provider of your device's speech service (for Google, see policies.google.com/privacy).
Centaur itself does not record, store or send the audio. The recognised text is shown to you for review and is only added to your manuscript when you choose to insert it. Your chosen dictation language is saved in the project on your device.
You can deny or revoke the microphone permission at any time in your device settings. Everything in Centaur except dictation keeps working without it.
3.5 Android backup
Android can include app data in the device backup that you manage in your device settings (for example Google's backup to your Google account). If you have device backup turned on, Centaur's data, including your manuscripts, may be part of that backup so it can be restored on a new device. This backup is controlled by you and your backup provider. MADiFold has no access to it.

4. Data security
Your data is kept in the app's private storage, which Android isolates from other apps. We recommend using your device's screen lock and encryption. Folder-linked copies and exported files are protected by the security of the location you choose. Because we do not collect your data, there is no copy of it on our side that could be exposed.
5. Data retention and deletion
- Data in the app: stays on your device until you delete it. You can delete individual projects in the app. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in Android's settings, removes all data stored in the app's private storage.
- Folder-linked copies and exports: remain where you put them until you delete them there. Uninstalling the app does not remove them.
- Emails to us: if you contact us, we use your email address and message only to respond to you. We keep that correspondence only as long as needed to handle your request and then delete it.
6. Your rights
Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) you have the right to access, correct, delete and export personal data about you, and to object to or restrict its processing. Since our apps do not send your data to us, the only personal data we could hold is correspondence you send us. You can exercise your rights by emailing us at the address above. You also have the right to file a complaint with a data protection authority. In the Netherlands this is the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
7. Children
Our apps are not specifically directed at children. They do not collect personal information from anyone, including children.
8. Changes to this policy
If an app gains a feature that changes how data is handled (for example optional sync between devices), we will update this policy before that version is released and change the effective date above. For significant changes we will also mention it in the app's release notes.
